What a great day for the Eight Annual Western Montana Military Officers Association Golf Championship! This year it was held at the Whitetail Golf Course in Stevensville and coordinated by Ike Slaughter and Tracy Pohl from the Bitterroot area. Our turnout was a record with 16 men and women signed up.
It was a warm and sunny day as five foursomes eagerly waited for their chances to test themselves against the tough greens of Whitetail Golf Course. Will Deschamps and Don Malerk jumped off to an early lead of one over par thru two holes. After four holes Deschamps was leading Gary Swartz by one stroke. At the six-hole mark Deschamps had increased his lead to two strokes over Malerk and three strokes over Brenda Slaughter. At the end of the day, Deschamps hit a rough stretch and Malerk was able to catch Deschamps and tie him with 48’s; one ahead of Brenda Slaughter and beating Ike Slaughter by two strokes. This called for a one putt tie breaker from 50 feet on hole number nine’s green. Both Deschamps and Malerk hit great putts, but Malerk’s was closer, and he was declared WMMOA Champion for 2021.
Several of the golfers were highlighted for their skill:
- Longest Putt (Men) – Don Malerk
- Longest Putt (Women) – Tracy Pohl
- Long Drive (Men) – Don Malerk
- Long Drive (Women) – Brenda Slaughter
- Closest To the Pin (Men) – Gary Swartz
- Closest to the pin (Women) – Tracy Pohl
- Shortest Drive: Josh Colson
WMMOA looks forward to providing an opportunity for competition and comradery next June; plan to come join us.
